National Workplace Survey 2009 - Update
INTRODUCTION
In line with a commitment made in Towards 2016, the National Centre for Partnership & Performance is currently overseeing the second in a five-yearly series of national attitudinal surveys of employers and employees in Ireland.
The National Workplace Survey 2009 is being conducted jointly on the NCPP's behalf by the Economic & Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Amárach Research.
The overall survey comprises three separate research questionnaires, which collectively form the most comprehensive survey of workplace attitudes ever undertaken in Ireland.
These surveys are:
- A nationally representative study of 5,000 employees across the public and private sectors;
- A nationally representative survey of 1,500 employers in the private and commercial semi-state sector, and
- A survey of over 400 senior management and decision-makers across the public service, including the civil service, defence forces, Garda, prison service, regional bodies, non-commercial semi-states, and the health and education sectors.
The primary objective of the National Workplace Survey 2009 is to assess employers and employees’ attitudes, experiences and expectations of change and innovation in their workplaces. The Survey will generate comprehensive empirical data that will contribute to the development of a more robust national data infrastructure in relation to workplace and workforce issues.
The collection of this rich empirical data will support and inform not only the work of the NCPP, but also other economic and social policymakers. Building our capacity to engage in evidence-based policy development is particularly important, given the complex series of socio-economic challenges currently facing workplaces throughout the State.
THE SURVEYS IN DETAIL
1. Telephone Survey of Employees
The ESRI and Amárach Research are currently conducting a nationwide confidential telephone survey of employees on behalf of the NCPP. The aim of the survey is to examine people’s current experiences of their workplace, covering issues such as job satisfaction, working conditions, workplace innovation and involvement and consultation of employees.
The results will help the NCPP to understand how to better organise the way we work so that we can plan for economic recovery. A similar survey was undertaken in 2003 and was used as the basis of the government’s National Workplace Strategy. The new survey will allow us to measure changes that have occurred in the last five years.
The telephone numbers for the survey are selected at random from all around the country so that the ESRI and Amarach can speak to a representative group of employees.
If you are contacted by telephone by one of the ESRI or Amárach interviewers, it would be a tremendous help if you would complete the short survey on your experiences at work. All of the information collected will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
2. Postal and Web Survey of Employers
The ESRI and Amárach Research are currently conducting a nationwide confidential postal and web survey of employers in both the public and private sectors. The research is being undertaken on behalf of the National Centre for Partnership and Performance. The aim of the survey is to examine current challenges in workplaces throughout the country, and employers’ responses to these challenges. The survey covers topics such as challenges faced by employers today, responses to these challenges, the relationship between employers and employees, and workplace innovation.
The results will help the NCPP to understand how to better organise the way we work so that we can plan for economic recovery. A similar survey was undertaken in 2003 and was used as the basis of the government’s National Workplace Strategy. The new survey will allow us to measure changes that have occurred in the last five years.
The employers contacted for the survey are selected at random from all around the country to ensure we collate the views a broadly representative group of employers. The employers who responded in 2003-2004 are being contacted again, as well as employers who were not contacted previously. We are seeking responses from all public-sector employers, as well as some 1,500 employers in the private and commercial semi-state sector.
If you are contacted by telephone by one of the ESRI or Amárach interviewers, it would be a tremendous help if you would complete the short questionnaire about the situation in your workplace. All of the information collected will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
