New Research Finds 4 in 10 Irish Workers Want Greater Involvement in Their Workplace
More than 40% of Irish employees wish their workplaces had a stronger culture of partnership and employee involvement, according to figures released today (Wednesday, 17 October 2007) by the National Centre for Partnership and Performance (NCPP). Just over one in five workers also believes that the organisations they work for are ‘way behind the times’ on issues relating to workplace change and innovation.
On a more positive note, 64% of employees believe the organisations they work for are open to new ways of working and new ways of thinking, while 63% say that they are good at informing and communicating with them. In addition, 58% of workers feel their organisations are good at consulting their employees, and 56% believe their employers value the feedback they receive from their people.
The results are drawn from market research commissioned by the NCPP into employees’ perceptions of their work culture. The research was conducted by Millward Brown IMS in July of this year, involving a sample of almost 600 adult respondents in full-time, part-time and self employment. An earlier phase of research was conducted in April/May 2007, just before the NCPP launched its ‘OPEN’ advertising campaign in support of the National Workplace Strategy.
Reacting to the findings, Lucy Fallon-Byrne, Director of the NCPP, said:
“The fact that 60% of respondents have generally positive views of their working environment is very encouraging. It suggests that the message is finally getting through to employers that employee involvement and engagement is the way forward. However, it is also quite clear that much remains to be done to persuade others of the benefits of partnership, change and innovation in our workplaces.”
The ‘OPEN’ campaign aims to promote greater levels of openness to workplace partnership, change, innovation and learning. It has been running across television, radio, internet and outdoor media since mid-June. A revamped National Workplace Strategy website – www.workplacestrategy.ie – has received more than 10,000 hits since its launch in June.
After the campaign’s first burst of advertising, Millward Brown IMS found that 40% of respondents were aware of the National Workplace Strategy, compared to 35% in the pre-campaign study. Of these, almost 85% were able to correctly identify its main objectives.
Commenting on these findings, Velma Burns, Research Manager at Millward Brown IMS, said:
“This research shows the effectiveness of an advertising campaign in generating a positive change in attitude among its target audience. This is a very positive finding – particularly for a campaign with a relatively modest budget.”
